The Book of Boba Fett Review S01 Episode 2

Starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, The Book of Boba Fett is the fourth show of the post-sequel era, and so far, it's shaping up to be a mix of the original trilogy and the prequels.

Having elements of the prequels in a new "Star Wars" show may put some people off, but in reality it is a good thing. With The Book of Boba Fett, you get all the space politics of the prequels, but with the dark, gritty world of the original trilogy, which brings me to the spoiler section of this review.

However, if you don't want to be spoiled, I believe this episode has both many flaws and a lot of good aspects that people will enjoy. It is highly likely that you will enjoy this show if you enjoyed the story and visual style of The Mandalorian.

Throughout the first episode, "Stranger in a Strange Land," Boba's escape from the Sarlacc Pit and subsequent capture by the Tusken Raiders are mainly shown as flashbacks. I had been hoping the show would address this issue since The Mandalorian season two. The first episode doesn't give us much insight into the plot or the direction it will take, but we can assume that the plot will mainly revolve around Boba Fett's struggle for power after becoming the Crime Lord.

Some fans may find the first episode boring and uninteresting because it is half flashback and half present. There are many flashbacks outside of the opening, which are eerily similar to the second episode of season one of The Mandalorian where Jawas destroyed Mando's ship and he had to fight a creature to retrieve it.

If you replaced Jawas with Tusken Raiders and the ship with freedom, you would get the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett, which is disappointing. In any case, this does not mean that the entire series will be this way; the jury is still out on whether this is a good show, and it's great to see Disney delve into a character that we didn't know a whole lot about.

One of the most important parts of "Star Wars" is getting the characters right, and they are doing a good job with Boba Fett so far. A great quality about Boba is he's not invincible like Mando, who couldn't even be hurt by a pseudo-lightsaber because of his literal plot armor.

Thankfully, this show will make the main characters more mortal, which will give it more stakes and weight. This first episode has a lot of great qualities. Visuals and CGI were mostly great, with the exception of the new creatures, and the design of the various races of creatures, especially those in the cantina, was excellent.

The CGI and Boba Fett's abilities stood out in addition to the plot of the story. The last part is particularly disappointing, since Dave Filoni, who is working on the project, is usually great at ensuring that each character has consistent abilities. I don't want to give too many details as it may come across as bullish, but I hope that they remember that Boba Fett had a jetpack. The new monster at the end of the episode looks so poor quality when it comes to CGI. I personally believe it's because of the lighting and the fact that the color palette is so bright compared to the creature's greyish black design, but it's just a nitpick.

The Book of Boba Fett is shaping up to be a fascinating look into Boba Fett and his character. As the trailers usually show only the first few episodes, I am personally very interested in seeing where this show goes. In fact, I felt the same way watching the first episode of The Mandalorian season two, so it's easy to believe that the best surprises are yet to come. The final episode isn't bad, but it's also not great either. Hopefully, future episodes will be better.

Rating: 3.5/5
